Necessities I Hate Doing

Friday, February 27, 2015

It use to be so simple. The things you didn't want to do, but had to do because your parents or your teachers or your babysitter made you. Homework, mowing the lawn, walking the dog. Now, there's no one to make you do it. But that's a trick, a ploy played by the universe to get us to think we have free will, when really, there's no choice at all. Now it's life.

I'm talking about this pesky things we have to do, the necessities. Sure, you can argue that most of these things are simply things we should do, but peer pressure is real, ya'll. (Besides, most of these are "you'll-be-sorry-if-you-don't-do-it" kind of things.) And these feel less like a chore and more like a requirement. Wah, adulthood is hard.

Washing dishes.

Dentist visits.

Ironing suits.

Using a primer.

Shaving.

Untangling headphones.

Sorting and shredding mail.

Hanging my coat.

Putting on lotion.

Getting dressed to workout.

Waiting for the next train.

Using a deep conditioner.

Being extremely nice to asshole waiters because I'm afraid they'll spit in my food.

Calling Time Warner about a cable outage.

Trying on denim in department stores.

Folding fitted sheets.

Writing a cover letter.

Taking DayQuil, NyQuil or any other -quils.

Getting my hair 'trimmed'.

Turning off the light or checking that the door is locked when I'm already tucked in.

Turning around when you think you forgot to lock your apartment door.

Repainting the smudged nail.

What about you? Anything you wish you didn't have to do?

  1. Haha! These are hilarious! I would also like to add being nice to people I cant stand out of obligation (like those I work with or my friend's awful significant other), washing my face, paying bills, cleaning my cat's litter box, etc.

  2. I love this so much. For one, fuck the fitted sheet, for real that thing hates me and I hate it right back. Also, the smudged nail - I basically start over because I screwed it up so much. I never have to wait for the next train (anymore) because I live in the 'ville, but it was annoying at home. Dealing with immigration is super annoying and horrible but it is a necessity if I want to stay in this country.

  3. This is such a great list. All of them are definitely annoying in their own right. Untangling headphones, anything to do with hair removal and most importantly that damn fitted sheet. It slays me. Every time. I think just being nice in general to people who are being ass hats sucks. Unfortunately, duty calls and something like service with a smile. Blah. ;)

  4. Oh my gosh I love this list. I also hate anything having to do with car maintenance (inspection, oil change, tire pressure, etc...). Shaving is probably the most annoying one. I remember my mother telling me that once you start shaving you'll never stop so I should really hold off and wait til I was older but I was so excited to start!! Now I dread having to do it. Haha

  5. Yup, this list sums up my adult life. I related to every single item on this list, Kari. Too real. I've really started hating writing cover letters. I'm in the process of applying to jobs and for each position, I have to reword my cover letter. SO annoying!

  6. haha girl all of this!! I love that washing dishes is first because thats my number one problem - no dishwasher in the apartment! Also what the hell is up with fitted sheets. Its a pain to fold and a pain to put on! You are better than I with being nice to waitresses who are assholes. I just get grumpy and inspect the food for spit!

  7. I despise sorting and opening mail! If it is not a card from someone than I really just wish that it would instantly burn the second it hits my mailbox. So much junk mail!!! Changing clothes to work out and then having to immediately shower and change again is also pretty annoying!
