Books To Be Read 2014

Isn't she lovely? *insert goggly heart eyes here*
The Law Library of Munich

It's been said 74615 times, but of course I can't believe there's only 3 weeks left until the end of the year. Wasn't I just embarking on my final semester of law school like yesterday?! I don't know how much I'm looking forward to mistakenly writing "2013" for the first few months of the year (seriously, it always takes me like 2 months to adjust!), but I know I'm excited to set a new reading goal for 2014.

Last year, I set a goodreads goal to read 6 books for the year. What? 6 books is like nothing! I know. Now, that I'm a normal person I look at that number with embarrassment. But when you are in law school you couldn't be further from being a normal person, and you are lucky if you finish your case reading every night. As I explained in this post, I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to read one book, and I finally completed the first book towards my goal in September! According to my goodreads counter (check my sidebar to be goodreads friends!), I've read 4 books, which means I have to read 2 in the next 3 weeks - totally doable. I just started Pride and Prejudice, a novel I should've read years ago but never got around to it. And, I will finish the year out with either Divergent or One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.

But this post is about my "to be read" list of 2014. With all this free time on my hands, I've become obsessed with reading, writing and book reviews, and I must admit that it feels great to fall back into those things again. So, I'm excited to compile a reading list for the upcoming year. I searched on google "how many books can I read in a year" and landed on some community page where people were saying they read 8-15 books per week. Eeeeep! I don't know how that's possible, but my goal is much more modest than that (minuscule in comparison really). I intend to sent a goal of 20 books for 2014, but I don't have a definite list just yet. Here's a list of a few books I'm interested in. Leave me a comment below with lots and lots of suggestions!!

Divergent series by Veronica Roth
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fotzgerald
Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead
What She Left Behind by Tracy Bilen
The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
The Book Thief  by Markus Zusak
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
Forever by Pete Hamill
A Sport and a Pastime by James Salter
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
The Good Lord Bird by James McBride
The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman

Truly, my interest in some of these novels is peaked by the upcoming movie adaptations and, as I've said before, I don't like seeing a film adaptation without first reading the book.

Do you have a "to be read" list? How many books do you plan to read next year?

  1. When I was in law school I rarely ever read books for fun, and if I did, it was during the summer break while interning. So I definitely know what you mean. I graduated 5 years ago, so I've had time to adjust to reading for fun while entertaining a full time job and sadly bringing work home (ugh!). This year I set my goal to read 40 books - my most ambitious goal. I'm currently sitting at 32...but I am determined to finish the last 8 before the end of the year...somehow. I've got some travel to visit my parents planned, and that usually means lots of down time and they are used to me with my head in a book!

I love your list of "to-reads"! I highly recommend Gone Girl - it was my absolutely favorite book of all that I read last year! Right now I am reading The Descent series by S.M. Reine. I'm book 5 of 7. It's young adult fantasy/paranormal but it was really easy to get into. Definitely quick reads!

  2. I feel kind of like a reading slacker - 8 to 15 books a WEEK?! How is that possible? I wish I could do that, then maybe I'd make a dent in my to-read list. Here's a few recommendations for you, just books I love: I Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe is amazing, The Ruins and A Simple Plan by Scott Smith - both fantastic, Water for Elephants, Prep, Me Before You, Lunch in Paris, In the Woods by Tana French, Far From the Tree. I've never set a reading goal but maybe I should. It might encourage me to spend more time reading, which would make me very happy!

  3. Oh my gosh. I have so many books that I want to read! I just wrote out a 30 before 30 list, but I'm also thinking about adding a page that is my "Reading List"! The Divergent series is definitely on my list and I want to read The Book Thief as well! I have so many books running through my head. Partly the reason I want to make my Reading List for my blog is so I can keep up with everything I have to read! ha

  5. It's always nice when someone understands my struggle and lame law school/law jokes :) 40 books is ambitious as hell but sounds really doable with the time left. Let me know how it goes!
Looks like I'm going to have to read Gone Girl then, and maybe The Descent because I have heard quite a bit about it. I'm addicted to YA which is why so many of my goodreads books are YA ones but I really need to start reading adult books. Ha!

  6. I haven't the slightest clue, really. I'm assuming they do nothing but read. I can get through a really awesome book in 3 days if I read read read, but that's still only 2 a week! I'm actually glad I read slower because I feel like I get so much more from the book when I'm done.
Thanks so much for all of your suggestions. I've added quite a few of them to my goodreads list and I'm sure you'll see a review on here sometime next year :) I'm really excited to check out Me Before You, Water for Elephants, and I am Charlotte Simmons!

  7. I'd say create a Goodreads account & then be my friend!! LOL. I love goodreads because it's an easy way to add books to your virtual shelves (read, to read) and keep track of everything while also checking reviews.

  8. No way! I've heard such amazing things about the entire Divergent series. Eh, that makes me slightly less excited to read them.
& if you're trying to find a book just for you, Goodreads will recommend books to you after you've rated enough of them. Look at me over here advertising for them like they paying me! (They're not).

  9. Yes, I've been advised not to expect anything "magical" from Casual Vacancy, and I'm okay with that. I just want to read something else by JK. I also heard great things about Cuckoo's Calling but totally forgot when making me list. Adding it now, thank you!

Leave me love ❤ If you don't get a response from me, it's probably because you're a no-reply blogger. Fix that!
